When I first saw this carousel, a few miles outside of Portland, I knew immediately I had to shoot there. It took nearly 2 years before it finally happened. And, it was well worth the wait.

Five girls met me at the mall after closing last Superbowl Sunday to have their portraits taken. After a brilliant hair and make-up job by the ever-so-talented Aimee J’Adore, each girl chose a hand-crafted wooden horse to hop up on and then the magic happened! It was almost like there could be no wrong shooting on such an epic prop. From the most experienced girls to the ones who’d never taken a fashion photo before, each girl seemed to pose so beautifully and present her unique style effortlessly.

I look forward to creating more extravagant portrait opportunities in the future. I want to create beautiful photos for every day people as well as models. I believe we can move past the JC Penny’s studio portraits, and that individuals (& even families!) should take their portraits to the next level. I envision building sets and creating beautiful one-of-a-kind art pieces, where anybody could be the star. This is just the beginning.

Chris Denner does something very important, that I fear a lot of us photographers forget to do when we find ourselves making at least rent money in our careers. Even with all his success, he still initiates photo shoots collaborating with teams of test models and stylists, just to push the envelope a little. Chris says this is to constantly evaluate and improve, and it’s hard not to respect an artist who recognizes we are all on an endless journey to continue to hone our crafts. The artists who forget this simply get comfortable, go stale, and thus get left behind.

For this androgyny endeavor, Chris teamed up with Rebecca Yates, Ellie Hill, and Guy Addison in the UK. Together they created a series tangling elegant femininity with heavy machoism. The result is a beautiful blur of the sexes. I can’t wait to see what Chris comes up with as he keeps pushing his photography forward.

“Life is not perfect” she tells me over e-mail, “A perfect retouched photo is boring. I like smudges, scratches, and splashes!” This is Dashdot, a photographer in the Netherlands who’s splashing around in her darkroom is yielding some very beautiful results. Using a variety of interesting darkroom techniques, such as brushing the developer onto the paper as opposed to submerging it entirely, she gets her bubbles and fabulous imperfections. Even her paper, some as aged as 15 years old, is a random collection from the photographers around her who have abandoned analog for digital. Having returned to the darkroom myself recently, I really appreciate her creativity.

This series is called “Victorian Memento”, She describes it on her site as a time of romance, sentiment, and mystery. In the series, “the model is wearing a very special bustleskirt; an animal skull. Sometimes it seems she stands on the tips of her feet, balancing, sometimes she is confident and posing firmly. Photographs with a religious atmosphere breathing the
transience of life.” Dashdot.nl for more!

Another brilliant young photographer creating beautiful fashion photography in a place far, far away from my little place in Portland, OR. Check out 20 year old Mingqiao Lian in Bejing, China! She has been working in a photography studio in Peking for the past two years since studying fashion design in school. That’s about all I know, but what more do you need? Her work speaks for itself. Sleek, sensual, and effortless. Her website is in a language I don’t understand, but if you click here maybe you can do as I do and at least enjoy the pretty pictures!

Brian DeMint of Eyeworks Photography had never photographed Sara Audrey before. That’s because there wasn’t a single fashion photographer who had. The following is Sara’s first ever photo session, and what a beautiful job was done. My favorite thing about Brian’s story is that none of this was even planned. He created all of this beautiful nonsense on the fly with Sara, playing on her own style and intuitive ability to pose rather then placing her in a pre-packaged set up. It just goes to show: a little time, openness, a truckload of creativity, and the ability to roll with things can create the most stunning results.

KEEP SHOOTING & SUBMITTING FABULOUS PHOTOS!

(I can’t post without a photo, right?! Here’s something I made today from a holiday shoot with the Gomberg Family!)

19 year old Daniel Lehenbauer is off to a solid start with his budding photography career. Working with what he’s got, as most of us do in the beginning, the shoot was done in his small London flat bedroom, with the bed pushed to the side. He set up studio lights and created this shoot with designer Caty Palmer, who put together the wardrobe with her unique knit designs paired with dead, decaying, and wilting plants and flowers surrounded in floral plastic. The decaying flower theme at some point transformed into Tatiana from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, but regardless of direction or inspiration, the results are fabulous. Studying photography in one of the fashion meccas of the world, Daniel is sure to keep the inspiration level high and the results churning out. I look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

This feature is RIDICULOUSLY exciting for two reasons: the photographer is a great friend & the subject dances just like Michael Jackson! Win WIN!

I photographed South Florida photographer Chris Martin years ago for his own music promos, but lately he’s been hiding behind the lens himself. It’s been really exciting to see him transition into a new solid career. To learn, share, and be close with other artists in the field is really the backbone of this blog.

I really dig what Chris did with this shoot for Kryiss Grant, the first dancer to be chosen by the late Michael Jackson himself for the ‘This Is It’ tour, to promote Kryiss’ new music project. G-Star, a school in FL, with it’s multiple sound stages and outdoor plane location proved the be a fabulous dynamic backdrop for a solid day of shooting. The results are so polished; what a beautiful variety for the management team to use for their advertising and marketing. *High fives* to all involved!

Photographer Darien Revel of Aesthetic Alchemy doesn’t just take the photos, she creates them. From set design to make-up, Darien likes to have an active role beyond ‘photographer’. While prop hunting, she found a few clocks that she used to ground the theme for this fashion set. The photos for for Artifice Clothing, a company Darien had worked with years earlier as a model (another role of course)! Busy bee Darien resides in Richland, WA but travels often and seemingly constantly. Be sure to check out more of her outstanding work online as she may be popping up in a city near you soon!

When photographer Kim Akrigg was offered the shoot with fashion model Sari on her beautiful farm, she jumped at the chance to get out of the studio. Vancouver BC gets chilly, so comfy knit sweaters and woolen things became a natural choice when developing a theme for the shoot. Kim’s work is always richly styled and hauntingly beautiful, I can’t get enough. For more, check out her website and facebook
